Informations on producer
Two very different wine projects, Tenuta di Trinoro in the southernmost part of Tuscany and Passopisciaro on the slopes of Mount Etna.
Andrea Franchetti, hailed as one of Italy’s most charismatic producers, ventured into the world of winemaking in the 1990s, starting the restoration of the ruins of an ancient fortified country house immersed in the Val d’Orcia, a no man’s land on the Tuscan border with Lazio, without any winemaking tradition.
Determined to plant vineyards but lacking agricultural techniques, he set off for Bordeaux, where he learned the art and philosophy of winemaking from great masters such as Peter Vinding, Peter Sisseck, Alain Vauthier of Ausone, and Luc Thunevin of Valandraud.
In 1991, he planted the first vineyards with cuttings brought from Bordeaux, and in 1997, after years of experimentation, he produced the inaugural vintage of Tenuta di Trinoro, immediately well-received by international critics.
After establishing the prestigious estate of Tenuta di Trinoro, he decided to start afresh and began restoring an ancient baglio with a cellar that would become the core of the Passopisciaro winery.
Through his efforts to revive old Nerello Mascalese vineyards and plant new vineyards with allochthonous varieties such as Petit Verdot, Cesanese di Affile, and Chardonnay, he, along with a handful of other pioneers, contributed to the oenological renaissance of the Etna region.
One of the first to recognize the potential of individual volcanic terroirs formed by distinct lava flows, Andrea Franchetti introduced and promoted the concept of Contrada wines, inspired by the Burgundian cru model. Among Franchetti’s achievements on Mount Etna, in addition to creating Contrada wines, is the conception of the acclaimed international wine festival “Le Contrade dell’Etna.”
Each wine expresses the characteristics of the vintage, the specificity of the terroir, and the full potential of the grape variety used.
“I like making wine. It’s a work of art that changes every year. Throughout the vintage, you are influenced by the landscape of the place where the wine is made. You gather impressions conveyed by the daily natural scenery, the changing seasons, and transmit them to the wine.” (Andrea Franchetti)
